Climate Change & Capacity Building

201,000 tree seedlings planted and community groups trained in agro-forestry and environmental rehabilitation.

Overview

The semi-arid regions of Machakos County face increasing pressure from climate change, including erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts and soil degradation. NACODEV's Climate Change and Capacity Building programme equips communities with the knowledge, skills and infrastructure to adapt and build resilience.

Key Activities

  • Agro-forestry tree nursery establishment and management
  • Distribution of 201,000+ tree seedlings across community groups
  • Terracing and gabion construction for soil and water conservation
  • Community group capacity-building workshops
  • Clean cook stove production and distribution
  • Environmental awareness campaigns in schools and communities

Objectives

  • Plant 201,000 tree seedlings across Mwala and Yatta sub-counties to restore vegetation cover and reduce soil erosion.
  • Train 90+ community groups in agro-forestry, land management and climate-smart agriculture.
  • Construct terraces and gabions on degraded hillsides to slow runoff and rebuild soil fertility.
  • Reduce household carbon emissions by distributing energy-efficient cook stoves to 1,000+ families.

Impact So Far

Over 201,000 tree seedlings have been planted and hundreds of community members trained in tree nursery management. Terracing and gabion works have visibly improved water infiltration and reduced gully erosion in several project areas.
